Clearance of germ granules in the soma
نویسنده
چکیده
Germ granules are ribonucleoprotein complexes specifically segregated into germ cell lineages in diverse organisms. Recent studies indicate that multiple mechanisms are involved in the clearance of germ granules and their components in somatic cells in Caenorhabditis elegans embryos.

MEG-1 and MEG-2 are embryo-specific P-granule components required for germline development in Caenorhabditis elegans.
In Caenorhabditis elegans, germ granules called P granules are directly inherited from mother to daughter and segregate with the germ lineage as it separates from the soma during initial embryonic cell divisions. Here we define meg-1 and meg-2 (maternal-effect germ-cell defective), which are expressed in the maternal germline and encode proteins that localize exclusively to P granules during em...

Germ granules (P granules) in C. elegans are required for fertility and function to maintain germ cell identity and pluripotency. Sterility in the absence of P granules is often accompanied by the misexpression of soma-specific proteins and the initiation of somatic differentiation in germ cells. To investigate whether this is caused by the accumulation of somatic transcripts, we performed mRNA...
متن کاملSpecification of the germ line.
In C. elegans, the germ line is set apart from the soma early in embryogenesis. Several important themes have emerged in specifying and guiding the development of the nascent germ line. At early stages, the germline blastomeres are maintained in a transcriptionally silent state by the transcriptional repressor PIE-1. When this silencing is lifted, it is postulated that correct patterns of germl...
متن کاملReevaluation of whether a soma-to-germ-line transformation extends lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans.
The germ lineage is considered to be immortal. In the quest to extend lifespan, a possible strategy is to drive germ-line traits in somatic cells, to try to confer some of the germ lineage's immortality on the somatic body. Notably, a study in Caenorhabditis elegans suggested that expression of germ-line genes in the somatic cells of long-lived daf-2 mutants confers some of daf-2's long lifespa...

What happens when you get rid of P granules? Mutants that fail to partition P granules to the P lineage are viable and fertile, suggesting that P granules are not essential to distinguish soma from germline in embryos. Mutations in individual P-granule components lead to sterility at high temperature and impaired translational control of at least some mRNAs. What happens when germ cells lack al...
